Fall 2015

Module 3 Exam

The examination for the third module of the course will take place as part of the FINAL EXAM for the class, which will take place on Thursday December17.

a.  HOW AND WHEN TO TAKE THE EXAM

PLEASE NOTE: The exam will be taken online through the CANVAS/ELMS website.

Students can begin the exam at any time from 12.00am on Thursday December17, however, they MUST COMPLETE BOTH SECTIONS OF THE EXAM by 11.59pm on Thursday December17.

b. STRUCTURE OF THE EXAM

The exam will comprise the following sections:

     Section 1.  40 multiple choice or true/false questions (2 points per question)

     Section 2.  ONE written thematic question (20 points per question)

It is up to you whether you take Section 1 (multiple choice) or Section 2 (written thematic question first, and whether you have a break between them.  Our recommendation would be to take Section 1 first, then have a break for an hour or two and take Section 2.

c. FORMAT FOR EACH SECTION OF THE EXAM

Section 1.  40 multiple choice or true/false questions (2 points per question)

     i. The examination will consist of multiple choice/true false questions designed to test your knowledge and comprehension of material covered in Module 3 lectures, readings, and video clips.

     ii.  Once you begin the multiple choice section you will have a maximimum of 60 minutes to complete it.

     iii.  Having completed a question, you are not allowed to return to it.

     iv.  The multiple choice questions are selected from a question bank for each module, and are generated in a random order specific to each individual exam taker.

Section 1I.  ONE written thematic question (20 points per question)

     i. The written thematic question will focus on an issue/concept drawn from one of the topics in Module 3.  As such, when answering the question you are expected to draw upon relevant material (lectures, readings, and video clips) related to the issue/concept.

     ii. Once you begin the written thematic question, you will have a maximum of 30 minutes to complete it.

     iii.  You will type the written thematic question in a text entry box and then submit it.

     iv. Immediately prior to submitting your answer, you should cut and paste a copy of it as a Word file and keep it on your computer.  If there are any issues with the submission process, and you need to submit it via email as a Word file to course instructor and your TA within 5 MINUTES following the end of your allotted time on Canvas.   After 5 minutes you will not receive credit for the email submission.

     v.  In your thirty minutes alloted time for the thematic question, you are expected to write a response that is:

- specifically focused (answer needs to respond specifically to the question posed, rather than simply write in general terms on the topic)

- logically structured (developing a response of related sentences/paragraphs that build an argument);

- conceptually relevant (engaging the related concepts/issues introduced in lectures, readings, and/or videos);

- appropriately cited (through citation of the readings related to the issue/thematic)

     vi.  Evidently, you only have 30 minutes to answer the question, there is a limit to the amount you can write in this time.  So, you should concentrate on writing 2-3 quality paragraphs (each paragraph being a minimum of 3 sentences) that answer the question as best you can.

     vi.  The written thematic question will be randomly selected from a question bank for the module.

d. TIMING THE EXAM

Since you must complete both sections of the exam by 11.59pm on Thursday December17, the very latest you should begin the exam is 8.20pm, as you are allocated 60 minutes for Section 1 and 30 minutes for Section 2.  However, you are strongly encouraged to start the exam much earlier in the day.  Remember, the website will close at 11.59pm, even if you are in the middle of a response!

e. HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAM

When preparing for both sections of the exam, you are expected to engage the relevant lectures, video clips, and readings in relation to KEY CONCEPTS and THEMATIC REVIEW QUESTIONS.  These will be covered in weekly discussion sections.

Evidently, since you are taking this exam by computer via the CANVAS/ELMS website you do have access to your course materials (lectures, video clips, and readings).  HOWEVER, the exams is structured and timed in such a way that if you need to refer to these materials, this will significantly eat into your time making it difficult for you to complete the exam in the allotted time.  HENCE, you are STRONGLY encouraged to prepare for the exams as you would do for an in-class, closed book exam.  In other words, you need to know the material, rather than merely knowlng where to go to find the answers.
